Nosferatu Pix 2010

This is the closest I've come to not coming up with a Nosferatu Pix list at all. It's sort of a mess. I'm surprised to see how many movies I watched this year, I thought all that I saw was "The King's Speech" and "True Grit". Those came out in November and December, that was Academy Awards Obeisance season. January to September, as we know, is Ordinary Time, and there has never been a more barren Ordinary Time. There's never been a more barren year.

ORDINARY TIME: January - September 2010

It's true that four of the ten (TEN!) Oscar nominees came out between April and September: "Winter's Bone", "Toy Story 3", "Inception", and "The Kids Are Alright". Yet these films never really had a chance at Oscar gold. That's what happens when there is a compulsion to nominate TEN films for best picture during a particularly awful year for movies.

Film comments:

"The Book of Eli", Gary Oldman was, once again, a pretty good villain. My least favorite actor Denzel Washington was not bad. Good to see Jennifer Beals working.

"The Wolfman", it was at least fun to see how pleased the werewolves looked once they were transformed.

"The Crazies" was not bad. Yes, looks awful, but it was entertaining.

"Leap Year", I dunno, at least I didn't turn it off.

"Splice" I turned it off, it was awful.

"Hot Tub Time Machine", I should have turned it off.

"Shutter Island", one of my least favorite actors Leonardo is confirmed as one of my least favorite actors. Ben Kingsley and Max on Sydow were slumming. Good to see Jackie Earle Haley working, for the moment he was in the movie, but he was slumming too. So was director Martin Scorsese.

"The Runaways", Kirsten Stewart makes a good Joan Jett, but unfortunately not a noteworthy movie otherwise.

"Iron Man 2" I was looking forward to, Mickey Rourke was great as the Russian villain with electro whips. Unfortunately it tried to have too many characters and deteriorated into a mess.

"Jonah Hex" - this is the last time I watch a movie based on a graphic novel. Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Megan Fox, how did anyone agree to being in this movie? What a mess.

"Inception", as I've mentioned in other places, I walked out of this movie in the middle after having paid Arclight admission price. Leonardo - gah, why did I bother?

"Dinner For Schmucks" - Steve Carrell was funny, Zach Galifianakis was funny, Jemaine Clement was funny. But the premise of the movie was built on Paul Rudd's adoration for his foreigner girlfriend Stephanie Szostak who was unlikeable. The premise was ultimately too distracting and displeasing.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" turns out this was another one based on a graphic novel.

"Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps", it put me to sleep (wonder how many other people have used that line, I don't read enough reviews). The first "Wall Street" used the Talking Heads song "This Must Be The Place" to good effect, so Oliver Stone had more David Byrne songs for this movie and they were immediately forgettable. I hope people stop putting Shia LaBeouf in movies.

Ordinary Time Films that look interesting that I didn't see:

"Winter's Bone" - I never read anything about it until today, I hope it's good.

ACADEMY AWARDS OBEISANCE SEASON October - December 2010

BEST FILM:

"The King's Speech"

"True Grit"

Film Comments:

Six of the ten (TEN!) Oscar nominees didn't come out until somewhere between October and December: "The Social Network", "127 Hours", "The King's Speech", "Black Swan", "The Fighter" and "True Grit". Why all this talk about the Oscars? After all, who cares about the Oscars? The problem remains that Oscar hopefuls are often not released until ACADEMY AWARDS OBEISANCE SEASON October - December. Regardless of distain for the Academy Awards, this creates the situation where I don't have good movies to go see in the theater for most of the year. This was the worst year for movies in my memory and the only films that I was looking forward to didn't come out until December - "Tron: Legacy" and "True Grit" - and "Tron" turned out be less than what I had hoped. I'm grateful that "The King's Speech" took up the slack.

Academy Awards Obeisance Season films that look interesting that I didn't see:

"Secretariat" - I want to see a movie in which John Malkovich does a good job. So it's said.

"Black Swan" - I want to know why Natalie Portman has spooky red eyes.

"The Fighter" - I've heard that it's good, I'm willing to give it a try, especially this year.

"Biutiful" - I like Javier Bardem. I was going to avoid it because I thought that it was about Mexican sweatshops, and that sounds boring.

That's all. Maybe it's me. Maybe I just don't like movies anymore?
